Water softeners are devices engineered to decrease the hardness of water. Water hardness is caused by high amounts of dissolved minerals, primarily magnesium. These minerals can cause a number of problems, such as build-up in pipes and appliances, and uncomfortable skin and hair. Water softeners function by using a process called ion exchange.
